WPKN 89.5 FM Community Radio

Our Mission, at WPKN independent community radio station, is to strengthen and enrich our community through programming that is provocative, innovative, and free from commercial influence. Programming that promotes diversity, tolerance, and freedom of expression.

Founded in 1963 and located in Bridgeport Connecticut, WPKN is a 10,000-watt listener-supported community radio station broadcasting at 89.5 FM. We are also streaming live online here at WPKN.org, the TuneIn Radio app or the Radio Garden app. WPKN’s terrestrial signal now reaches to a listenership of 1.5 million people in Connecticut, Long Island, parts of New York and Massachusetts. Operating 24/7 and largely run by volunteers, WPKN offers a unique and eclectic mix of live and recorded music, news, public affairs, spoken word, arts & culture and other free-form programming which defy genre. We are proud to be listener-supported, commercial-free, community-driven radio available to the public at no cost, any time, day or night. We are here for YOU, any time, day or night.

High on the vestiges of Black History Month and celebrating International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, WPKN turns to an action-packed three days of on-air fundraising with BOLD SOUL SISTERS, celebrating the women of funk and soul on WPKN.

Taking place Sunday March 23rd through Tuesday March 25th, Aretha Franklin’s 83rd birthday.

Saturday, March 29th from 11AM to 5pm it’s WPKN’s Music Mash 2025, at Foolproof Brewing Company at 800 Union Ave in Bridgeport. WPKN Music Mash is an annual record fair to benefit independent, freeform, community radio at WPKN Bridgeport 89.5FM. Presented by Record Riots, a collective who own and operate record shows all over the country, WPKN Music Mash features thousands of vinyl LPs, 45s, CDs, and collectibles from over 50 top specialized dealers. WPKN will have merch and retired LPs and CDs available with proceeds going directly to support the operations of the station. Live DJs, music, Foolproof beer and food round out this destination day for music aficionados in the region.

Twelve-inch album covers inspired by the theme

“Anthems of Hope and Resistance: SING LOUD and SING PROUD.”

As we move into 2025, many of us are struggling to find ways to “stand tall” amidst the external chaos. In response, WPKN has called upon our community of artists to RISE UP AND CREATE! Twelve-inch album covers – real or imagined – in any medium, inspired by the theme: “Anthems of Hope and Resistance: SING LOUD and SING PROUD.”

Album covers will remain on display throughout the station until end of April.

All of the original one of a kind submissions will be for sale online. 

All proceeds support WPKN, sustaining the independent music and voices you love.

Derv Gordon of The Equals & Jason Duncan of Just Add Water Records, and supporting rock ‘n’ roll band So What, took over Shake ‘N’ Vibrate Radio with DJ B The T Jr. ahead of the grand WPKN Presents throwdown, Wednesday, March 19th, at 8PM, at Cafe Nine in New Haven.

WPKN Presents Valerie June in concert at District Music Hall in Norwalk, Wednesday, May 7 with doors at 7pm and the show at 8pm in partnership with Premier Concerts and Manic Presents. June, a Tennessee based musician, singer, songwriter, poet, and certified yoga and mindfulness meditation instructor showcases a distinctive style and signing voice in her concerts and albums.

WPKN Presents Drive-By Truckers, Deer Tick, Thelma and the Sleaze, Tuesday, July 29th at 7PM with Premier Concerts and Manic Presents at College Street Music Hall in New Haven. This guitar driven rock ‘n’ roll show features three original American acts, with the Drive-By Truckers nearing 30 years as a band.
