Bridgeport, CT January 8, 2023 – WPKN Independent Community Radio and The Gallery Upstairs at The Institute Library are collaborating on an event to celebrate Women’s History Month, and we want YOU to participate in this open call for the art exhibit, Sound & Vision II: For the Record….
How?
By making art for an exhibition of fake album covers celebrating women. Bands we’d like to see, rework one that exists or make up an all-new album and performer. Protest, celebrate, rewrite history, imagine a future, make up a dance craze…
The idea is to create a visual and sonic tribute to musical women everywhere. This is a unique celebration of women’s history month through images, words, and music.
We consider “women” to be all who wish to identify as such, and we celebrate by creating an inclusive space for breadth and diversity of vision.

The exhibit will be at The Gallery Upstairs at The Institute Library in New Haven, and will run March through May, 2023 with an opening reception and a closing dance party. To Participate:
It is free and open to ALL. We mean it. All ages- kids, grannies, everyone, any gender or identity, all colors, backgrounds, and levels of artistic experience are cordially invited to apply. One thing: You do need to be able to commit to getting the work to us, and to collect it when the show is over.
- Make a work — it must be 12 x 12 inches — like an “album cover” celebrating women musicians real or imaginary.
Redo your favorite artist’s best record, invent your own girl-group, create a diva and her playlist, imagine a musical tribute to a favorite historic S/hero, the sky is the limit.
Are you a musician yourself? Make your dream album cover!
Are you a super-fan? Show us the love…
Use words and images in any media: collage, paint, digital, print, drawing, photography, textile, your choice.
The works will be collectively displayed in plastic sleeves on the wall as if in a record shop.
If so desired, a playlist may also be included.

– - Please wrap your work carefully to protect it, and mark it as for the gallery, with your own name also on the packaging.
– - Ship or drop off to the Institute Library at 847 chapel street, New Haven Ct 06510 during regular open hours.
DEADLINE:
All work must be dropped off or shipped to the library no later than February 15, 2023. Late work will NOT be accepted.

There is NO FEE to enter but all artists are responsible for getting work to and from the exhibition. We have no resources for shipping.

The organizers reserve the right to not include work if it does not conform to the size and the concept of the exhibit, or if it contains inappropriate content. For instance, nudity is acceptable, hate speech is not. We want the exhibit to welcome all ages so please be mindful of that.

About The Institute Library
The Institute Library was founded in 1826 as the Apprentices’ Literary Association, an educational society dedicated to the “mutual assistance in the attainment of useful knowledge” through a shared book collection and weekly discussion meetings. It soon expanded into a full membership library with its own building, collection, and events. The library maintained a lively roster of distinguished visiting lecturers with an emphasis on liberty, freedom, and progressive ideals. To this day, the library is an active site for education, history, and civil discourse.
The Gallery Upstairs at the Institute Library focuses on timely exhibitions relating to words, books, archives, or collections, focusing on important issues surrounding social justice though the pairing of contemporary art and historic documents, often from the library collection. Martha Willette Lewis has been the resident curator since 2015 and has put together over 15 exhibitions to date.
