North Fork Works with Hazel Kahan
This month on North Fork Works, Hazel Kahan welcomes back Sister Margaret Smythe, who runs the North Fork Spanish Apostolate, with offices in Riverhead and Greenport. Sister Margaret, who helped found North Fork Spanish Apostolate in 1997, has provided comprehensive services addressing the needs of the growing mostly Hispanic immigrant population, both legal and undocumented, with issues ranging from employment assistance, inadequate housing, education, unpaid wages, healthcare, abuse in the workplace, to basic tasks, such as guidance with applications and school forms. The organization also runs a thrift shop and food pantry and hosts Spanish language masses in Greenport and Riverhead, where Sister Margaret maintains an office at the former St. John’s Elementary School. In this interview, Sister Margaret talks about how the Hispanic community has developed over the years and how broader national policies and other events have affected the individuals and families since she first started her mission on the North Fork.
